CS4 Committee Reports

4 items as of September 9, 2010, 7:36 am.

Committee: Awards Community: Ken Relehan, NH
Report: The committee met Friday, November 13 from 9 to 11:15 am in Omni Ballroom A. There was considerable discussion of the attempt to convert all award submissions to electronic format. There are difficulties- passcodes and the impact on NCSS staffing. Also accessibility to reviewers. Programs of Excellence are still done by paper, for example. Concern about providing feedback to non-winners. Concern about lack of applicants for some awards was expressed, but the observation that national criteria are far more than many states' was rejected. Extensive national criteria was not seen as a discouragement to applicants. Programms of Excellence forms call for certification by state ss supervisor- I pointed out that 13 states don't have one.

Committee: FASSE Governing Board:
Report: Contrary to what was reported at the 2009 Annual Meeting, CS4 is still represented on the FASSE Board. I did not attend the Atlanta meeting because of this confusion, but I am prepared to represent CS4 at FASSE until the next NCSS (Christa McAuliffe competition, for example).

Committee: FASSE Governing Board:
Report: July 6, 2010- I was finally acknowledged as a member of FASSE today, 7 1/2 months after the fact. I was also informed that the McAuliffe selection, the main reason for my interest, had been completed. I am not sure whether it is NCSS, or FASSE, or both, but CS4 participation does not seem to be much of a priority.

Committee: Research Committee:
Report: Four major topics of the NCSS Research Community meeting in San Diego 2007: 1. Award Sub-committees. The Community administers three awards: the Larry Metcalf Exemplary Dissertation Award, Exemplary Research Award, and the Jean Dresden Grambs Distinguished Career Research in Social Studies Award. General concerns about the lack of publicity and subsequent lack of nominees for each award. A focus for the upcoming year is to disseminate more information about the Community and its awards throughout NCSS. 2. Transition from Committee to Community. Governance under the new organization was discussed. A general board of officers will be elected to one-year terms, with Sub-community chairs for each of the three award programs. It was recommended that multiple new positions with various responsibilities be created to increase interest and membership in the Community, while at the same time making sure the positions and roles are legitimate and filled properly. The by-laws will be reviewed and developed in the coming year. The Community web page will be actively used and promoted as a communication tool for the group. I was elected as Vice-Chair for the year, to assume Chair of the Research Community in 2008-2009. 3. Presentations and Outreach. Suggested presentations for the 2008 Houston conference were discussed for a theme of Embracing the Future: Teachers and Students as Collaborators in Research. Possible Community poster session at Houston. 4. Code of Ethics. A “Code of Ethical Conduct in Social Studies Research” for NCSS was created and discussed. This document would be posted on the Community web page and for members to vote and approve within 30 days, after which it will be sent to the NCSS Board of Directors for approval. An “Ethics Coordinator” position was created to oversee this work for the Community.
