Synopsis :			An overview of Rock the Vote’s new high school civics program, Democracy Class, that covers the history of voting, the power of voting to affect change on the issues most important to students, and active citizenship. The lesson is interactive and has authentic outcomes.

Synopsis :			One of the challenges social studies specialists face is finding and making the best use of source material for both selected-response and constructed-response questions. This session offers insights into selecting sources that allow for the creation of associated questions that move beyond recall to test higher-order thinking skills.

Rationale:			A challenge social studies educators face on a daily basis is constructing meaningful source-based assessments that encourage students to \"stretch\" their skills and become more adept at critical thinking. A critical step in this process because at the point of source selection. A good source is the necessary foundation for \"good\" questions that foster analytical skills and critical thinking. This session can be offered as a short overview session (45-60 minute) or a more extended workshop, depending upon the needs of the audience and the time available.

Synopsis :			Andrea Morgan and IDEA representative Hilary Jones will present strategies and materials from IDEA as tools to address History/Social Studies literacy in the Common State Standards and critical thinking in individual states’ standards. The session will also present international programs run by IDEA and others as options for addressing standards.

Rationale:			Discussion and debate are essential to strong Social Studies instruction. The International Debate Education Association\'s (IDEA) techniques and materials offer CS4 members new professional development options when helping teachers instruct to literacy and critical thinking standards, in both current and historical contexts. Samples of IDEA materials will be distributed to CS4 members.
