Mission Statement and Goal

Our nation is not homogeneous, so its political history cannot serve as its shared cultural history. The People of America Foundation will develop national, state-specific and cultural databases that provide accurate social and political histories of the nation, as well as generic, thematic lesson units and individual lesson plans, to help educators meet the requirements of new standards-based instructional guidelines. Social studies professionals in each state and the District of Columbia will create these inclusive, content-rich databases and instructional units and lesson plans. As part of this initiative, the Foundation has begun to chronicle the history, contributions and achievements of all ethnic and cultural groups that, either voluntarily or by force, came to and moved through this nation to provide teachers with the resources to responsibly incorporate diversity-based curricula into standard social studies instruction.

Because the Foundation understands that demographics vary, it will rely on each state's education system to use the data in a manner that best serves the needs of its students. he Foundation will also provide each school with a printed summary of the most important state-specific elements to create a bridge between print and digital media. No less important, the Foundation will provide participating schools the staff development budget necessary to prepare teachers for this work, and will assist schools in meeting their community outreach commitments.

Distribution of Americans All® Program Materials

As a first step in its initiative, the Foundation has acquired the rights to the Americans All® national education program materials that provide teachers, students and parents with comparative information, previously unavailable, about each of six historical population groups that helped build the nation-Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, European Americans, Mexican Americans and Puerto Rican Americans. It will distribute these materials, currently used in more than 2,000 schools and libraries, at no charge to all participating public and private schools in the nation.

The existing Americans All® program is a demonstration of the Foundation's vision, expertise and database. It has succeeded in achieving broad recognition as a resource in the field of supplemental diversity information and has gained widespread acceptance from students, teachers, administrators and state officials.

To participate in this distribution, for which there is no cost, a school must verify its enrollment because the quantity and composition of materials each school will receive as a gift from the Foundation depends on its student enrollment. Each school must also provide the Foundation with the names of two instructors who will serve as liaisons to ensure that the program materials will be used. Instructor names will not be published nor made available to commercial list brokers, but will only be given upon written request to the appropriate school district or state social studies supervisor.

At a minimum, each school is guaranteed the following.

One Teacher Resource Package. This package contains one complete set of the Americans All® resource materials, the music program, the poster collection, the photograph collection and a CD-ROM of all program components.

Two Teacher Overview Packages. Each package contains one copy of The Peopling of America: A Timeline of Events That Helped Shape Our Nation, The Peopling of America: A Synoptic History and a grade-level-specific teacher's guide.

Two Grade-Level-Specific In-Service Training Videos . Three different videos, one each for the elementary, middle and high school grades, are available. Each school will receive two videos and may choose two of the same grade level or one each of two different grade levels. A separate teacher's guide will be supplied with these videos.

Additional copies of the teacher resource package, the teacher overview packages and the photograph and poster collections will be provided to schools with larger enrollments to ensure the program reaches the maximum number of students.

Following the distribution of Americans All® program materials, the Foundation will provide funding to enable each state to create state-specific resource materials in the areas of social studies and diversity. These state-specific materials will then be produced and delivered to each participating school within the state. In addition, all state-developed information, including data that was gathered but not incorporated into the printed materials because of space limitations, will be consolidated, organized and posted on the Foundation's national education Web site.

School registration enables principals to receive funds through the Foundation for staff development so the program materials can be used most effectively. It also qualifies the school to receive a biweekly newspaper and future publications prepared under grants to the Foundation and to have access to instructional and teacher learning sites hosted by the Foundation. Registration enables teachers and principals to gain national recognition for posting effective, school-developed lesson plans on the Foundation's Web site.

Promotion of Community Outreach

Registered schools will have automatic access to the community outreach component of the Foundation's initiative. The Foundation will circulate model service-learning initiatives that can help satisfy the requirements of the standards-based reform movement. It will also assist schools in creating community outreach programs to help ensure that students stay in school and gain exposure to the world of work and career opportunities. In addition, the Foundation will deliver at no charge to participating schools a biweekly newspaper and 10 cable television programs. Topics could include how to incorporate into the school and community an appreciation for diversity and how to reduce school dropout rates and tensions among students of diverse backgrounds. Staff from registered schools will also be invited to participate in periodic national meetings and conferences.
